What is Sustainable Tourism?

Sustainable tourism refers to travel where the impact on the environment is actually a net beneficial gain, or at least neutral, especially regarding carbon emissions.

Sustainable tourism is sometimes used synonymously with responsible tourism, but it’s actually just a part of it. Responsible tourism involves being conscious of more than just the environment, but also the destination’s people, culture, religion, etc.

More on Sustainable Tourism

Basically, sustainable tourism is traveling somewhere and leaving it a better place (or at least not worse off) than when one first arrived, environmentally speaking. Every aspect of the holiday process has some negative impact on the environment, from booking flights on the computer to takeoffs, landings, and layovers; sustainable tourism aims to alleviate this impact.
