What is a Passenger?

A passenger is any traveler on a public or private vehicle other than the driver, pilot, crew, and other working employees.

PAX is an abbreviation for “passengers” that has been adopted into everyday usage by many in the travel industry. The term “No PAX” is used to refer to journeys, often by planes or cruises, which don’t have passengers aboard, such as a positioning flight.

More on Passengers

A passenger usually refers to a paying customer, but not always is that the case. Passengers may be the people carpooling to work together during a morning commute who are not driving the car, for instance.

Passengers are usually not responsible for the overall safety or operation of the journey, though they are usually required to obey the instructions of the transit personnel onboard the respective mode of transportation. For example, Uber passengers are likely required to put on their seatbelts, and plane passengers are required to be seated when the plane is taking off or landing.
