What is an Overstay?

In hospitality industry parlance, an overstay is a guest who stays past their expected check-out time without properly altering the reservation or requesting late checkout.

Overstay may be used as a verb to describe the action (they overstayed), and also as the noun identifying a person who does this action (he or she is an overstay).

More on Overstays

Most hotels will forgive a short overstay, perhaps up to an hour or two. However, if you stay much more than that, they will charge you.

Also, don’t overstay! Overstaying creates problems, as there is likely a guest waiting to check in to the room you’re using.
