What is a National?
A national is a person born in a territory that is under the administration of another sovereign entity; for example, Puerto Ricans are considered to be U.S. nationals. Also, of course, a person born within the contiguous United States are also U.S. nationals.

Citizenship is a legal status (“I am a citizen of the United States“), making it slightly different than being a national. A person from Poland may immigrate to Brazil and become a Brazilian citizen, but they would still have a Polish nationality (and, often, ethnicity).
