What is a Motel?

A motel is a kind of guest accommodation that is generally cheaper than a standard hotel and with less frills and most often with rooms that are accessible from the outside, rather than from within a central lobby.

Motel is a portmanteau of “Motor Hotel.”

The first motel in the world was the Milestone Mo-Tel of San Luis Obispo, California, built in 1925; today it is called the Motel Inn of San Luis Obispo.

Most motels have similar layouts, usually in the shape of the letter I, L, or U for the main building, as well as a small attachment or lobby for check-ins and possibly a continental breakfast.
