What is the IATA?

The International Air Transport Association, or IATA, is an international airline industry trade group, headquartered in Montreal, Canada, with executive offices in Geneva, Switzerland. It is separate from the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO, a UN organization also based in Montreal.

The IATA represents approximately 260 airlines from over 117 nations, accounting for 83% of all international air traffic. The IATA has numerous duties, including setting prices and ensuring safe and secure transit for its customers. The IATA also assigns 3-letter airport codes and 2-letter airline codes, such as “JFK” for New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport, and “SA” for South African Airways.
