What is the Estimated Time of Arrival?
The estimated time of arrival, or ETA, is the time a certain form of transportation is expected to arrive.
As opposed to the actual time of arrival (ATA), the ETA is the time that the flight, bus, train, cruise, or other mode of transportation is guessed to land, dock, arrive and be at the gate, which is subject to change all the way up until the vehicle arrives, depending on circumstances.
More on ETAs
Giving passengers an ETA helps to reduce stress and anxiety of the unknown, though there could be unknown circumstances throughout the journey up until arrival, such as weather delays, accidents, crime, or other such incidents.
The complementary term for estimated time of arrival is estimated time of departure (ETD).
