What is Budget Travel?

Budget travel is travel that is cost-conscious and price-aware.

A budget traveler is someone who travels usually finding cheap flight tickets, low-cost accommodations, wallet-friendly food, and free or cheap tourist attractions to visit while there.

The opposite of a budget traveler may be a business traveler, pampadour, or someone on their honeymoon or anniversary.

More on Budget Travel

A budget traveler may stay in economy accommodations such as hostels, eat cheap meals (e.g., street food), and fly during off-peak seasons (rather than peak travel periods), among other things.

Backpackers are a type of budget traveler, though not all budget travelers are backpackers, as they may not necessarily be staying for a long period of time, they lean towards budget hotels/motels rather than hostels, and usually their trip is not open-ended.
