The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building in the world, a megatall skyscraper nearing a kilometer in height. It is constructed out of a mixture of steel and concrete, and it is home to luxury residences, a hotel, office space, and a 1,823 ft-high (555.7 m) observation deck.

2. Shanghai Tower

The Shanghai Tower might come in second place for tallest building in the world, but it offers the highest observation deck in the world, at 1,841 ft (561.25 m). However, it shares this title with the Ping An International Finance Centre.

Known also as the Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower, the Makkah Royal Clock Tower is a megatall tower located within the Abraj Al Bait complex, which includes 7 skyscrapers.

Fun Fact: The Abraj Al-Bait Clock Tower is the most expensive building in the world, as its construction costs came to around $15 billion in USD.

4. Ping An Finance Centre

Located in the Futian District of Shenzhen, Ping An IFC, or the Ping An International Finance Centre, shares the title for the highest observation deck in the world, at 1,841 ft (561.25 m). At just shy of 600 meters, it doesn’t qualify to be known as a megatall skyscraper, instead qualifying in the supertall realm.

5. Lotte World Tower

Lotte World Tower in South Korea’s capital city is the country’s tallest skyscraper, the second non-megatall on this list (as a megatall must be over 600 meters tall).

6. One World Trade Center

One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the entire Western Hemisphere. Its height of 1776 feet is meant to honor the year of America’s independence. It replaces the Twin Towers which were destroyed in 2001.

The CITIC Tower, popularly called China Zun, may have its top three floors taken over by Chinese security forces, as it is thought that, on a clear day, a person on those floors may be able to see into the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Zhongnanhai.

Though it stands right next two other towers on this list, the Shanghai World Financial Center is easily recognizable by looking like the handle of a tall kettlebell. The Park Hyatt Shanghai is located within, and it is considered to be the third-tallest hotel in the world.

11. International Commerce Centre

In marketing material, it is said to be a 118-story building, rather than 108 stories, which it really is. This is due to the fact that many East Asians have tetraphobia (avoidance or fear of the number 4), and so the building left out many 4-numbered floors.

The Petronas Towers are likely the most-recognizable symbol of Malaysia, the tallest twin towers in the world. These two skyscrapers shared the title of being the tallest skyscrapers in the world from 1998 until 2004, when Taipei 101 took that title over.

Many people still call the Willis Tower in Chicago by its former name, Sears Tower. It is very distinctive in the skyline, both for being Chicago’s tallest building, as well as for its two antennas used for television and radio broadcasting. Willis Tower was the tallest building in the world from 1973 to 1998, when Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Twin Towers took the crown.
