Hungary Travel Guide: Country & Destination Information for Visiting

Hungary travel guide and destination overview of the country. Key information, general overview, and more for travelers to Hungary.

Updated: 2019-06-22.

Hungary (Magyarország) is a country of just over 8 million people located in the eastern portion of central Europe. Located in the Carpathian Basin, it is bordered by Serbia and Croatia to the south, Slovakia to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the east, Slovenia to the southwest, and Austria to the west.

Budapest, the capital and largest city of Hungary, straddles the scenic Danube River, like so many great European cities seem to do. In a similar fashion, the country itself straddles both central and eastern Europe, and is a good segue into each from the other, like Turkey is between the eastern and western worlds.

Hungary has many interesting places to visit throughout the country. Lake Balaton in Hungary is the largest lake in central Europe, and the country is also home to the largest thermal water cave system. Budapest is quite a magnificent city architecturally and culturally, and many people consider it to be one of the most beautiful capital cities in the world. The Hungarians have quite a rich history, and many castles and museums throughout the country can attest to this fact. Hungarians also know their wine, surprisingly enough, and actually produce some delicious whites in many regions.

Hungarians speak Hungarian, also known as Magyar, a Finno-Ugric language which is the most spoken non-Indo-European language in the European Union. It is also considered by many to be one of the most difficult languages in the world to learn. The word “Magyar” can also refer to the Hungarian people as an ethnic group.
