A subcontinent is a geographical land mass that is large enough and distinct enough to be separately distinguished from its larger body, the continent itself.

The Indian Subcontinent is a perfect example, since it is quite large and distinct, in that it takes up most of southern Asia. For more, see our article on How many continents are there?
