Port

Updated: 2017-12-07.

As a directional term on any ship/vessel, port refers to, when facing forward, the side of the ship or aircraft that is on the left; this is not necessarily always the left side, as the left side can change when facing rear. Port is always port, no matter which way the ship is facing; starboard is its opposite, the right side of the ship when facing forward.

See also: starboard, fore, aft.

Relating to places, a port is a town or city with access to water, such as a seaside town.

In maritime terminology, a port is a harbor used to dock ships and maintain them.
