First Officer

Updated: 2017-03-27.

The first officer is the pilot who is second in command. The pilot in the cockpit sitting on the right with 3 stripes on their shoulder epaulets. Often colloquially referred to as the co-pilot because they are the second in command, they are usually just as qualified as the captain.

First officers are always fully qualified to operate the flight, and may “take the wheel” to allow the captain to do other things.
